  Fruits Basket was released to DVD in nine individual volumes by King Records on a monthly schedule from 29 September 2001 through 22 May 2002, with a series box set released on 25 April 2007. The series is licensed for Region 1 and Region 2 release by FUNimation Entrainment, which released it as four individual DVD volumes containing 6-7 episodes and as a complete series box set. As part of their release, FUNimation renamed all of the episodes, which originally had simple names of "First story", "Second story", etc. On 20 November 2007, FUNimation re-released the series as part of their lower priced Viridian line, with the new release containing the complete series in a thin-packed box set. The Region 2 Untied Kingdom releases were done through a sub-licensing agreement with Revelation Films. The series was released in Region 4 by Madman Entrainment as a series box set.

   Fruits Basket deals with some adult issues of abuse and neglect as we dive deeper into the Sohma back-story. It's nothing to detour younger kids from watching, but it's something you should be aware of. Several moments in Fruits Basket are very sad. Although, most of the series is upbeat and energetic, beware that towards the end your emotions might be in for a roller-coaster ride.
Overall, Fruits Basket is an excellent DVD series. I recommend buying the entire set. However, the DVD series does cut off much earlier then the manga. If you can only buy one, the DVD or the manga, I would recommend the manga. It takes more time to develop the characters and the story continues on well past the DVDs. Think of the DVDs as an excellent gateway into the larger world of Fruits Basket.
